The first of our series featuring people we love and admire, who find joy and comfort in pursuing the things they love.
We spent a sunny morning with @vezotolu.vadeo at her home, who painted and lounged in our Pink Checks set, talking about some of her favourite things in life and what she loves about painting, something she sets time aside for in her everyday routine.
Vez is an artist quintessentially, although she’d disagree and balk at such a categorisation of what she does or who she is. But she’s more than skilled at more than just a few things - currently she works as an art conservator for the better part of the week, but she also paints and designs clothes, and also knits, edits and cooks - all of which she does exceedingly well and not with much effort.
A notoriously early riser, she’s already through lunch when we meet one Saturday, although it’s barely 11 am. She tries on our Pink Checks set, and pairs the shorts with a vintage style cotton blouse, as we chat about her favourites. Later she pairs the shirt with a pair of denim shorts, while putting the final touches on a painting.
We chat about a few things:
So Vez, what do your weekends usually look like?
“More and more, i prefer to just be home, do chores, cook something delicious, tend to my little business, paint and end the day with a movie.”
And so I ask her about the kind of clothes that make her feel:
Comfy:
“Cotton mul mul tops, jeans and sneakers.”
Sexy:
“This is hard to say in a few words. A nice low-ish V-neck, mid length dress on bias cut, with sleeves, not tight, just envelops the body as a bias cut will do.”
Silly:
“Means? A boyfriend tee over bloomer shorts?”
So how long have you been painting and what do you love so much about it?
“My first oil painting was in high school art class. I dont know what i love about it, it was always just there. I took my love for it for granted thinking everyone loved it, everyone could do it (everyone can, if they practised). Now im more appreciative that i never grew out of it.”
What’s a favourite piece that you worked on recently?
“Recently, the one i did for you, your cat shrine. It was back breaking for quite a small piece, but worth it.”
Do you enjoy painting any particular type of subjects or objects?
“Some objects that i was afraid to go near i have now come to love. Glass (the transparency, reflectant quality), then dogs and cats (hair is daunting) and some more im sure I’ll tackle and come to love.”
Let’s talk about some of your favourites.
Food - “Naga always, but any good home cooked vegetarian meal, because, anybody can make a good meat dish, with little to not effort.”
Book - “Cant pick. But Frankenstein will always be in the top 5.”
Music - “Mad or what. Too many.”
Animal - “My spirit animal, the eagle. And cats and dogs both.”
Place - “I dont know, anywhere my people are.”
Memory - “Oho, too hard.”
